Narrowboat Refurb - Can Emtrade Help?

Did you know that zinganised narrowboat will not have to be removed from the water for at least 10-15 years!

Elizabeth Taylor is the Commercial Director of Emtrade International, a specialist coating application company, and has worked on major coatings projects with clients such as BAA, Corus Bi-Steel, Transport For London and the MoD.
This report has been written in consultation with anti-corrosion specialists to help you make the right decision! Findings of this report are listed below (in blue).

Before making commitment and investing your money in narrowboat refurbishment I strongly recommend you consider the following facts;

Narrowboats are becoming a major investment at £120K plus for a new one. More people are now living on their boats and use them as their permanent homes, so hence taking them out of the water can cause great inconvenience and can be more expensive in the long term.

  • A narrowboat that is only coated with a paint system will need to be taken out of the water every 2-3 years at an average cost of £1100 each time. This excludes the cost of maintenance work and the materials used.
  • Narrowboats coated with a paint system rely on anodes for corrosion protection but can still have corrosion problems from being scratched against lock walls, jetties and other boats
  • The anodes on painted boat will only protect the underwater part of the shell. If the upper sections of steelwork become physically damaged, they will corrode
  • A zinganised narrowboat not only have to be removed from the water for at least 10-15 years but also the entire shell will be protected against corrosion, and scratches that damage the paintwork will never cause corrosion on any part of the boat
  • Zinganised narrowboats will not burn
  • If a painted narrowboat is moored in a marina for several months (or longer) and is using shore power and if this boat has no internal earthing protection, the electrical current can leak into the water through the shell. This causes the paintwork to blister and peel off
  • Narrowboats have rubbing-strakes welded onto their sides to prevent the sides of the boat from being scraped when they go through locks and these sensitive areas can be a cause of coating breakdown exposed to corrosion if not protected
  • If your boat is 20 years old or older it can still have appearance and the effect of a new boat by being blast-cleaned, zinganised and painted. If it has a new propeller and two new anodes fitted it will not need to be looked at again for at least 10-15 years
  • A painted narrowboat will require at least six or eight anodes. A zinganised narrowboat only requires two in the stern area and these will last a long time

Remember that despite millions of pounds invested in development of coating systems the corrosion protection you achieve will only ever be as good as the expertise of the coating application company.
